The process of egg freezing
According to experts, the process of egg freezing takes between 2-3 weeks to complete. It involves stimulating the ovaries to produce eggs along with your menstrual cycle to ensure positive results.
A doctor first conducts a medical exam which involves hormone testing along with a transvaginal ultrasound which helps assess your ovarian reserve or the number of eggs that are there in your ovaries.
Thereafter, stimulation injections begin which help stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs during a cycle.
After that, the process of egg harvesting, also known as egg retrieval is done from your ovaries. During the procedure, the doctor uses a transvaginal ultrasound probe with a needle, which is inserted into your follicles under ultrasound guidance.
Doctors say that the number of eggs retrieved depends on the age and ovarian reserve being the two most important factors.
Side effects of the procedure
Experts say that many women feel cramping, bloating, constipation, and vaginal spotting within the first day of retrieval. Many also feel discomfort, abdominal pain, feel faint or lightheaded, or heavy vaginal bleeding, which the doctors say subside within a week.Other unwanted side effects include:
- Weight gain
- Bloating
- Mood swings
- Headaches
Finally, within a few hours of egg retrieval, the mature eggs that were successfully collected will be frozen through a process known as vitrification.
