BOWIE, MD — The city of Bowie is recruiting a public health officer. This unpaid position would advise the City Council throughout the coronavirus pandemic. The officer would also enforce health code, work with the city manager and partner with the director of emergency management.

"We have followed the lead of federal, state, and county officials throughout the COVID pandemic," Mayor Timothy Adams said in a press release. "As we move to the next phase of recovery and reopening, we believe it is important to have our own medical advisor to guide us in our decision making."

Adams recommended creating the position last year, and the City Council made it official with an ordinance. The candidate must hold an advanced medical or public health administration degree.

"We know that there are many talented professionals in a variety of fields in Bowie and the surrounding area," Adams continued. "We are hopeful that there is medical doctor out there who has time and an expertise in public health to share with the Bowie community."

Bowie posted the application on March 15. It closes on Dec. 31. More information is available at
