A gynecologist who worked at a Dutch fertility clinic decades ago fathered at least 17 children with women who thought they were receiving sperm from anonymous donors, hospital officials revealed Tuesday.

The late doctor, Jan Wildschut, worked from 1981 to 1993 at what is now known as Isala Hospital in the eastern city of Zwolle. Officials said in a statement that the hospital had no knowledge at the time that the man was using his own sperm as part of an artificial insemination program.

“From a moral perspective, Isala finds it unacceptable that a gynecologist-fertility doctor was both practitioner and sperm donor,” the statement reads.

Wildschut, who died in 2009, may have fathered even more children during his time at the hospital. Authorities have created a DNA profile of the doctor so that other people conceived through the program during those years can check if he’s their biological father.

The gynecologist’s family and his biological children are in regular contact and have a good relationship, according to the hospital.

This is the second IVF scandal to hit the Netherlands in as many years.

DNA results confirmed last year that another late doctor fathered dozens of kids using the same tactic. Jan Karbaat, who also inseminated patients with his own sperm without informing them, is believed to have fathered at least 49 children in the Netherlands and other countries.
