A $76 million hospital expansion is underway in Bullitt County.

“There are no inpatient services here in Bullitt County. We are going to bring that to them, and my goal is to truly impact the health care and the health of Bullitt County residents,” said Dorie Shelburne, UofL Health-South Hospital CEO.

In 2020, almost 25,000 patients came to Medical Center South’s emergency room for care, but more than 2,000 of those patients had to be sent to emergency rooms in other counties.

“Being an outpatient care facility, all of our patients come and go. They come in for outpatient imaging services or surgical procedures or they come through the emergency department to receive treatment, and then they are discharged home or if need be they are transferred to another facility,” said Tina Vandergriff, UofL Health-South Hospital Director of Emergency Services.

The construction of UofL Health-South Hospital will help expand access to health care. Two more floors are being built on top of the existing building.

The Shepherdsville facility will have a full-service acute care hospital with 40 inpatient beds, more providers, enhanced emergency capabilities, an intensive care unit, cardiac/vascular lab, increased surgical and outpatient services.

“Currently we are significantly under what you would expect per capita or per population of physicians, and it is significantly under what the average should be, and we are going to change that,” said Shelburne.

They’re also looking to hire about 150 more employees to provide better care for the community they serve.

“Everyone in this facility works very hard to make sure that every person that comes here is treated like family, and that will really be our goal going forward," said Vandergriff, "to provide the highest level of service as well as the highest level of quality.”

Construction is expected to be completed by next fall.
