CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Fairlawn-based Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center will take over operations of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center’s orthopedic and spine medical services in several locations on Nov. 15, Crystal Clinic announced Wednesday.

As a result, St. Vincent Spine and Orthopedic Institute locations in Independence, Solon, Westlake, Willoughby and Warren will remain open past Nov. 15, when St. Vincent ends surgical, inpatient and general emergency department care and transitions to outpatient and wellness services.

The ADAMHS board of Cuyahoga County on Wednesday granted St. Vincent $4.4 million to keep its psychiatric emergency department — one of two psychiatric emergency departments in Cuyahoga County — open in 2023.

Patients who need a hospital stay following orthopedic surgery will be treated at Crystal Clinic’s new Fairlawn hospital. The Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, which opened in 2021, is dedicated to orthopaedic and plastic/reconstructive care, and also includes physical therapy, diagnostic digital radiology imaging and more.

The Crystal Clinic hospital is about a 30 minutes’ drive from St. Vincent’s downtown hospital, where surgical patients were cared for prior to the shutdown.

“This transition of spine and orthopedic surgeons to Crystal Clinic is an important opportunity to provide a seamless move for the surgeons, their staff and their patients,” said St. Vincent CEO Dr. Adnan Tahir. “Patients will be able to continue to see these care providers in the same offices that they are accustomed to.”

Some St. Vincent orthopedic and spine surgeons, along with nurses, physical therapists and other caregivers will be hired by Crystal Clinic, but a final number is not yet available, Tahir said.

The changes will expand Crystal Clinic’s Northeast Ohio locations to 17.
