Health officials prepare for coronavirus threat; no cases confirmed in Indiana or Kentucky

The Floyd County Health Department is reviewing its emergency plans in preparation for a possible coronavirus outbreak.

On Wednesday, the department met with hospitals, schools, nursing homes and local government officials.

Dr. Tom Harris says Floyd county is updating the plan it used to combat the H1N1, or swine flu, pandemic in 2009.

Symptoms of the corona-virus include fever and cough. Harris says currently the state does not have the ability to test for it.

"Currently, all that testing is being done at state level or federal level. There aren't any local test kits generally available. This is a problem because you're looking at 24 to 36-hour turnarounds to confirm cases."

Harris says the best way to keep from getting sick is to wash your hands regularly.

There are currently no confirmed cases of the virus in Indiana or Kentucky.
