CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Hoxworth Blood Centers say they’re only collecting about half of the platelets they need.

They need both traditional blood donors and platelet donors to come in and donate as soon as possible.

Platelets take a little longer to donate, but they’re used for everything from cancer treatments to transplants. Right now, they’ve had a number of young people in our community who have needed this blood product.

The team at Hoxworth is on standby all the time for these blood products to get them to those who need them urgently.

“We have a 24-hour crew manning our lab,” said Dr. Caroline Alquist, the chief transplant services officer at Hoxworth Blood Center. “We are three full shifts. We’re always on call. If we don’t have someone physically in the lab, there’s always someone available to receive the test things on demand.”

If you can donate now through May 30, you will be entered into a drawing to throw out the first pitch at the Cincinnati Reds game on June 7.

To make an appointment, call 513-451-0910. You can also find a Hoxworth Blood Center location near you here.

Even if you can’t donate immediately, if you can make an appointment in the near future, the blood you donate is promised to area hospitals based on those appointments.
