Edith Oru admitted she was a little nervous as she climbed aboard the mobile mammogram bus Tuesday. She is also relieved and grateful.

As she sat to share her information with the intake nurse she didn’t have to worry about being turned away because she doesn’t have health insurance or because she can’t afford to pay.

“I don’t have that kind of money,” she explains. When asked if getting a free mammogram could literally be a lifesaver she responds without hesitation. “Oh yeah definitely,” she says.

That is the whole idea. The mobile mammogram bus belongs to the non-profit Breast Care For Washington DC. Today it was in Greenbelt at the African Women’s Cancer Awareness Association, a charity that’s been hit hard by the pandemic.

Fundraising for events like this is off 90% and because of fear of COVID, Association president, Ify Nwabukwu, says women are ignoring other health risks. As a breast cancer survivor herself, she says that can’t be.

“It’s something very personal to me. It saved my life and I will continue to shout it at the rooftop. 'Get your mammogram,'” says Nwabukwu.

The American Cancer Society advice is for women 45-54 to have yearly mammograms. Donita Caldwell works on the mammogram bus she says the whole process is painless. Caldwell says, “We make you feel comfortable. If you’re nervous, don’t worry. I can take care of you.”

If you’d like information about an appointment for a mammogram you can call Breast Care For DC at 202-465-7164 or go to their website at BreastCareDC.org.
