MARSHFIELD – In the past two weeks, nine people have died from COVID-19 at Marshfield Medical Center-Marshfield. The hospital's intensive care unit currently has 13 COVID-19 patients between the ages of 27 and 76; one patient is a married father in his 30s with a toddler at home, another is a woman in her 30s who was pregnant and needed an emergency delivery.

Thirty-three patients are currently admitted with COVID-19. More than 90% of COVID-19 patients at the Marshfield hospital have been unvaccinated.

Marshfield Clinic Health System shared these statistics Tuesday afternoon in a Facebook post, as it is dealing with its fourth COVID-19 surge in 18 months.

Additionally, the post said 92 COVID-19 patients have spent at least one night in the hospital since Sept. 1, including an infant in the neonatal intensive care unit on a ventilator.

These numbers are the rise, as a total of 80 COVID-19 patients spent at least one night in the hospital during the entire month of August.

In the first week of August, the hospital had just one patient admitted with COVID-19. By Aug. 22, it had 17, USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin reported last month. At that time, only two COVID-19 patients were being treated in the ICU.

The surge in COVID-19 cases is being seen in the community as well. On Monday, the Wood County Health Department reported 340 active cases of the virus and an increase of 412 new case from the previous week. Marathon County saw a spike too, reporting 1,001 active cases of the virus on Tuesday and 80 new COVID-19 cases on Monday alone.

Across Wisconsin, there were 1,085 COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals across the state with 332 in intensive care, according to Tuesday's data from the Wisconsin Hospital Association. Of 1,359 total ICU beds available in the state, only 79 were listed as immediately available, as of Tuesday afternoon.

Marshfield Clinic concluded its Tuesday evening post by urging everyone to get the COVID-19 vaccine, wear a mask and stay home if experiencing symptoms.
