The University of Notre Dame is bringing back more than 100 students studying in Italy in light of a coronavirus outbreak in the northern part of the country.
The university made the decision after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised its warning against non-essential travel to Italy.
Arrangements are being made to fly the 106 students enrolled in the Rome Global Gateway program back to the United States. Students will likely be subject to government health screenings upon return. They will also be required to stay home for 14 days and receive clearance from a physician before returning to school.

As the coronavirus spreads around the world, International health authorities are hoping countries can learn a few lessons from China, namely, that quarantines can be effective and acting fast is crucial. On the other hand, the question before the world is to what extent it can and wants to replicate China’s draconian methods. (AP Photo/Luca Bruno, File)

Half of that 14-day period will fall during the university's spring break. Officials expect the students will still be able to complete their academic requirements for the semester.
Faculty and staff who choose to return to the United States will also be flown back.
Notre Dame previously announced a ban on university-sponsored travel to China, where the coronavirus outbreak began in December, and South Korea. It has now extended that ban to include Italy. Other universities, including Indiana University, Purdue University and Ball State University announced temporary bans on travel to China earlier this month.
As of Thursday, state and local health officials have monitored 60 individuals with a history of travel to China in recent weeks. Of those, 26 people are still in voluntary quarantine in their homes. There have been no confirmed cases of the virus in Indiana.
The coronavirus outbreak had infected more than 84,000 people and killed nearly 3,000 people globally as of Saturday morning, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University.
