Science Behind Why Coffee Makes Some People Anxious

And seeing a large percentage of American adults (64 percent according to the latest survey) drinking coffee, it’s no surprise that any new news about the topic is consumed more often than not. We, ourselves, have published and are guilty of  the matter since we have devoted previous articles to latest information about the famous caffeinated drink, along with the good (or bad) that we can get from it.

Now, a huge amount of evidence all point to coffee being good for health, both physically and mentally. However, not everyone is the same. And unfortunately for some, the drink can alter their mood in ways they didn’t expect. So the question goes, can coffee cause anxiety?

Anxiety From Caffeine

While some benefit from the energy boost that caffeine provides them, some experience the opposite unfortunately and claim it just increases their anxiety levels.

“Within a month [of quitting coffee], my stomach pain subsided without having to take regular medication. When I began feeling better, I did opt for a regular cup of coffee, and it was then that I noticed how much it impacted my anxiety. With my heart and mind racing, I realized that coffee contributed to a sense of overwhelm and dread.... I felt rushed to complete tasks as if I was on a deadline,” Nicole “Cole” Hernandez, an entrepreneur and certified hypnotist, said.

What Science Has To Say

Well, according to a study made by the Institute of Neuroscience of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Karolinska Institutet (KI) in Sweden, long-term exposure to caffeine can actually worsen our neuropsychiatric symptoms, something that can lead to anxiety. Furthermore, caffeine also promotes the release of stress hormones called the cortisol, which of course, leads to our body responding with stress. For some people, stress can lead to either panic or anxiety, or is similar to it, which can then result in ruminations and mood swings.

In conclusion, while coffee has its own benefits, people can still react differently to it. And so those types of people should avoid it or consume it in high moderation.
