With more than 2 million subscribers, YouTube health coach Thomas DeLauer is no stranger to people who are doing the keto diet. He's known for discussing the best tips and biggest myths when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

In a recent video, he took a trip to Costco to share how he does some smart, keto-friendly shopping. Although shopping in Costco, or any wholesale grocery store, can be overwhelming, DeLauer revealed some of its hidden gems.

“We’re finding that Costco has more and more things labeled as keto,” he said. “But there’s always going to be those things that aren’t set out to be keto items but are perfectly good on keto.”

Throughout the store, DeLauer was able to find a variety of items from protein shakes and pancakes to frittatas and granola. He says the key is to understand what works and what doesn’t work for a keto diet. For example, soy and grapeseed are two fats that should be avoided. But olives and blueberries are great to snack on.

“Blueberries are super high on astaxanthin,” DeLauer explains. “Astaxanthin, and also anthocyanins, are antioxidants that are very powerful for the brain. They’ve been demonstrated to help brain function in lots of different ways.”

DeLauer also warns that although shopping for items that are labeled “keto friendly” seems like the way to go, actually reading the ingredients of the items you’re shopping for will spare you from a lot of deception. “Just because it says keto doesn’t mean that it is perfectly keto. People like to game the system. People like to do whatever they can to get people to buy something based on impulse. You have to do your own due diligence.”

Although here, he does a little bit of it for you, pointing you to Primal Kitchen's mayo with avocado oil, Sonoma Gourmet's kale pesto, 4505's pork rinds and more of his "hidden gems."
