Country Living 4/4/2023 Katie Bowlby

What a night for 1883-star Sam Elliott! The Hollywood icon has been nominated for Academy Awards and Golden Globes, but his win at the SAG Awards had the 78-year-old actor feeling emotional. His wife of nearly 40 years, Katharine Ross, was by his side to celebrate the achievement.

Sam took home the award for Outstanding Performance in a Television Movie or Limited Series. The actor accepted the award and gave an emotional speech, calling the moment the "most meaningful acknowledgement of my 55-year career." He thanked his costars, Taylor Sheridan, his fellow nominees, and his wife. He said, "Thank you to my wife, my beautiful Katharine. My partner through thick and thin and the mother of our beautiful daughter."

Sam and Katharine Ross walked the red carpet before the ceremony. Katharine, 83, is an Oscar-nominated actress who appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows, including The Graduate and The Stepford Wives. The two first met in 1969 on the set of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid but didn't start dating until a decade later when they starred together in The Legacy. They share a daughter, Cleo Rose Elliott, who is a musician.

1883 ended after just one season, and the storyline came to a tragic end for Sam's character, Shea Brennan. In an interview with Variety, the actor proposed a way to continue the story. He said, "I think everybody was sad to see it over; I know I was. I would have liked to have that wagon train go to Canada by then and just stay with it. My thought was, 'Let’s do a prequel of this.' Where was LaMonica [Garrett, who portrayed Thomas]? Where were those two guys? Pick it up after the war, when they were Pinkertons. There’s plenty of stuff to do."

We can only hope Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is listening! Until then, we'll be rewatching Sam's performance on 1883 on Paramount+.
