Just a few years ago, before Meghan Markle came on the scene and swept everyone's favorite flame haired prince off his feet, it would have seemed inconceivable for Harry to suddenly jump ship and abandon his royal duties.

Not only that, but it's especially surprising that he would leave behind the Queen in her old age, and his family and country during such a difficult time, especially with Prince Charles having tested positive for the coronavirus.

Supposedly, Harry did want to return to the U.K. when he heard about his father. But, royal commentator Katie Nicholl told CBC via email,“With the royals in isolation, there isn’t much they can do, although I suspect Harry will probably be feeling far from home right now."

She continued “They won’t want to take any risks by traveling, and their priority is to keep Archie settled and in a routine. I think they will come to the U.K. when it is safer to do so.”

Harry Claimed He Would Always Support William

And, what about his brother, Prince William? He has an enormous responsibility on his shoulders, and even more so now that Harry and Meghan have moved.

Harry's biographer Angela Levin wrote an article for Tatler recently in which she claimed Prince Harry told her he would always be there for his brother as he had "a duty to support" him and "would always be there for him."

With such strong links, especially the bond between brothers who have always appeared so close, is it possible that Harry will return to the royal family at some point? Does he even want to?

There Will Be a 12 Month Review Of Meghan and Harry's Positions

When Meghan and Harry came to an agreement with the royal family, it was understood that there would be a review of the current circumstances in 12 months time.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Insider, "Harry and Meghan's choice of independence seems completely clear at the moment."

He continued, "However, no one can predict the future with any certainty and the Queen, having released a statement after the Sandringham Summit confirming that they will not use their royal titles and will step down from royal duties but remain members of the royal family, wisely allowed for a reassessment of the situation after a year."

The British Media Would Be Ruthless If Harry and Meghan Returned

Should Harry and Meghan actually want to return to the royal family and their royal duties, the Queen would welcome them back with open arms, but would the British people? And, what about the press that the Sussexes despise so much?

Marlene Koenig, a royal expert, told Insider, “The royal family would certainly welcome them back with open arms. But the media would be without mercy. I would expect comments about tails between their legs.”

Koenig also mentions the long forgotten scandal involving Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex. She explained, "When Prince Edward married Sophie, she was successful and she worked in PR, and he ran his own production company [Ardent]."

The Queen Would Not Allow a Half-In, Half-Out Approach

"The Queen agreed to allow the couple to work at their careers with some royal duties ... this worked for a bit but it all came crashing down in 2001."

She continued, "It was a real embarrassment for Sophie who made some awful comments about politicians, and it seemed that she was using her position to get high paying clients."

The Queen wisely put her foot down when Meghan and Harry wanted to try a similar "half-in, half-out" approach. Not only did she not allow it, but the British people never would have gone for this either.

There Are Plans In Place To Make a Return Possible

If and when Harry and Meghan do want to return to live in the U.K., there are surely plans in place to make that happen.

A source told The Sunday Times, "They are making contingency plans in case the Sussexes suddenly turn round and say: ‘Can we come back under your wing?’ You could bring them back to Frogmore to look after them. They wouldn’t return to royal duties, but they could have a period of rehabilitation and recuperation.”

We'll have to wait it out for a few year and see what the Sussexes do next.
