How To Speak To Kids About School Shootings
Unfortunately, gun violence and school shootings are topics that parents can’t avoid discussing with kids. Here are some tips on how to have age-appropriate conversations with children about shootings. Early elementary school kids should be told simple information and reassured that their school is safe. Upper elementary and early middle school kids should know exactly how their school and community are keeping them safe. They may also need help “separating reality from fantasy”, according to The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). High school students and older middle school students will have strong opinions about violence in schools. It’s important that they know how to keep themselves and others safe and are aware of who they can turn to for emotional support.
