Celebrities have a strong platform to advocate for causes that are important to them, and typically the causes that strike a chord with their audience the most are those that are close to their hearts. A large portion of Gen Z and Millennials have been starting the conversation on gender identity. They've taught many individuals that there is a difference between sexual orientation and gender identity and how coming out as transgender, nonbinary, or gender queer has changed their lives.

There seems to be some idea that a person looks a certain way or acts a certain way, but it's simply ridiculous to think like that. In fact, below we have a list of 8 celebrities most people have no idea are either transgender, non-binary, or both.

Sam Smith announced on Instagram in 2019 that they are non-binary saying, “Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM. After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”

Sam Smith is a singer and songwriter from England. They rose to fame when their song "Latch," came in at number eleven on the UK Singles Chart. With their follow-up single, "La La La," featuring music from "Naughty Boy" the following year, their popularity as a performer increased. They won both the BBC's "Sound of 2014" and the "Brit Critics Choice Award" categories, for which they were nominated. Their debut album, which had numerous hits, was a huge success in the US and the UK. They also gained notoriety for being nominated for and winning four of the six "Grammy Awards."

Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me.” In the announcement, they also shared that their pronouns are they/them.

Demi is no stranger to speaking about what is going on in her life. Having gone to rehab for a drug addiction, battled an eating disorder, had suicidal tendencies, and getting diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. She has bravely put herself out there in an effort to help others who may be struggling too.

Brigette Lundy-Paine Is Atypical

Brigette Lundy-Paine from Atypical, Bombshell, and Bill & Ted Face the Music announced on IG in 2019 that they were non-binary and that they use they/them pronouns. Saying, “I’m non-binary, always felt a lil bit boy, a lil bit girl, a lil bit neither. Using [they/them] as of late and it feels right.”

Brigette is most known for their portrayal of Casey Gardner in Netflix’s Atypical. They discussed how their role in Atypical helped them come to terms with their sexual orientation when coming out. On the show Casey is discovering her own sexuality and everything to do with LGBTQ. Casey’s brother Sam is autistic; Brigette said, “Sam feels like a deep part of myself that I am only now beginning to let out: the insecurities and the complete confusion with the system and the rules that have been laid out for him.”

She is doing what is right and what she believes in. Hunter’s family was very accepting of everything she went at them with regarding her being transgender, and she knows not everyone has that same support system. She aims to make a difference.

On MTV's Faking It, Elliot Fletcher made his acting debut as Noah, which launched his career. Later on, he would temporarily join the casts of The Fosters and Shameless. Shortly after their 17th birthday, Fletcher came out as a transgender man and revealed that they use the pronouns he/him. The actor also took part in Jen Richards' 2017 effort, which was a video message to Hollywood urging it to provide transgender actors and actresses more and better jobs.

Despite being born with a female designation, Elliot identified as male. He also informed his family that day in August 2013 that he wanted to start living as a boy. The family wasn't shocked despite the announcement's magnitude. His mother Julia commented saying, "We had said goodbye to the concept of a little girl in her Christmas dress long before. So by the time he came out to us, we had gone past the idea of a bridal dress and walking down the aisle. This was a confirmation of what we already knew."
