GAITHERSBURG, MD — Students in Gaithersburg have qualified as semifinalists in the 67th National Merit Scholarship competition. There are 16,000 semifinalists nationwide, and 15,000 of them are expected to go on to become finalists. The students were designated as semifinalists because of their PSAT scores.

The students who named as semifinalists in Gaithersburg are:

Gaithersburg High School

  • Ishaan S. Antani

Quince Orchard High School

  • Robert J. Hellewell
  • Louis C. Lee
  • Noah R. Pinson
  • Alison S. Wang

"These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be offered next spring," the National Merit corporation said in the announcement.

Finalists will be announced sometime in February, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation said.

Finalists can win three types of National Merit Scholarships: $2,500 scholarships, corporate scholarships, and university scholarships. Corporate scholarships typically go to the children of employees or students who live in the community where the corporation is based. University scholarships are granted by the school the student will attend.

The winners of the scholarships will be announced in waves from April to June.
