The Syracuse City School District’s graduation rate in 2021-22 dropped about 5 percentage points compared to its rate last year, according to new data released by the state.
This year, the city’s graduation rate was 72%. Last year, Syracuse schools hit a record high graduation rate of 77.2%.
Statewide, the graduation rate was 87% for the 2021-2022 school year.
Graduation rates at three other districts were below the New York state average. Liverpool’s rate was 83%; Solvay 84%; and Tully 86%.

The graduation rate measures how many of the students who entered ninth grade in 2018 graduated within four years. For Syracuse, the rate increased from 64.5% in 2019 to 70.7% in 2020 and 77.2% in 2021.
Ten years ago, the Syracuse graduation rate was 53%, compared with a statewide average of 76.7% at that time.
Fayetteville-Manlius had the highest rate in Onondaga County, at 98%. Westhill was next at 97% and Jamesville-DeWitt at 96%.
