Coronavirus Causes 940 Wisconsin Layoffs In One Day

MILWAUKEE, WI —As the new coronavirus spreads through Wisconsin, many people are losing their jobs as a result of business closings and school closings. Within a span of a week, life in Wisconsin was transformed after schools were ordered closed on March 18. Dine-in restaurants were ordered closed on March 17. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services ordered a "safer at home" order on March 24, restricting people's movements for all but essential tasks.

Business are bearing the brunt of such limitations. According to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, 940 workers lost their jobs due to layoffs. The losses were all reported on March 23.

Hyatt Regency, Downtown Milwaukee

Owners of the Hyatt Regency, a 481-room hotel and conference center in Downtown Milwaukee, said they're laying off 112 workers due to the coronavirus.

According to a mass-layoff notice sent to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, "as a result of the unforeseeable, dramatic downturn in business and occupancy caused by the coronavirus natural disaster, we are writing to inform you that there will be a mass layoff at the Hyatt Regency," Colon Walsh, General Manager of the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee wrote this week.

Among the layoffs are clerks, banquet staff, servers, bartenders, catering managers, dishwashers, front desk agents, an executive chef and houskeeping staff.

Eddie Martini's Wauwatosa

On March 17, Eddie Martini's temporarily laid off 30 employees at 8612 W. Watertown Plank Road in Wauwatosa. "The duration of these layoffs cannot presently be estimated because they were prompted by the outbreak of COVID-19, a situation which remains in flux," Chris Murphy, President of Eddie Martini's Enterprises, said.

Black Shoe Hospitality, owners of several Milwaukee-area restaurants, announced a host of layoffs on March 17. They own the following restaurants:

Maxies, 6732 W. Fairview Ave. in Milwaukee

Blue's Egg, 317 N. 76th Street in Milwaukee.

Story Hill, 5100 W. Bluemound Road in Milwaukee

Blue's Egg, 4195 N. Oakland Ave. in Shorewood

Black Shoe Bakery, 320 N. 77th Street in Milwaukee.

Black Shoe Hospitality owners said they're laying off the following workers:

37 line cooks

9 dish washers

3 bakers

41 servers

19 bartenders

19 hosts

27 support staff

Owners said the aforementioned restaurants are now operated as a take-out dining facility. The layoffs are temporary, but indefinite, they said.

Wisconsin Central School Bus

The owners of Wisconsin Central School bus informed the state on March 19 that they were laying off 90 bus drivers temporarily because schools across the Milwaukee area closed due to the coronavirus public health emergency. All employees were part-time.

Mickey's Linen

The owners of Mickey's Linen, 7400 Douglas Ave. in Milwaukee, said they're laying off 33 plant production employees, three administrative staff, and 12 route service representatives.

"This is expected to be only temporary, until around the time that bans on the hospitality providers and other businesses serviced by the company are lifted," Scott V. Kamins wrote this week.
