J.C. Penney on Friday said it eliminated 130 positions from its corporate headquarters in Plano, Texas.

A report circulated Thursday evening that the company was eliminating staff at those offices.

"Just as we conduct a review of our stores and supply chain operations each year, we continually evaluate the productivity of our Home Office structure to ensure that it efficiently aligns with the business," a spokesman said. "Certain positions have been eliminated as a result of this annual assessment."

Meanwhile, Penney is shaking up staffing within its department stores.

Roughly 230 positions have been cut from Penney's stores, the company said Friday. The annual cost savings generated from the staff cuts are estimated at about $20 million to $25 million.

As part of those changes, the retailer will introduce "dedicated omnichannel supervisors" to its store management teams. In the home department, it will assign people to lead the appliances, window coverings, furniture, and mattress categories. These are just a few examples of how resources are shifting, Penney said.

"JCPenney is implementing a store staffing model to simplify processes, improve productivity, and manage expenses," a spokesman said earlier this week, as a report surfaced that Penney would be eliminating some full-time jobs within stores.

"The new organization redistributes tasks and responsibilities more efficiently among store associates to support Company growth initiatives, resulting in substantial cost savings while maintaining our commitment to delivering excellent customer service," he said.
