Seven innovative medical startups are vying for $40,000 in cash prizes at this year's Get Started Medical Pitch Competition, which is part of the Innovate South business conference in Lafayette.

The event is virtual and free this year, but registration is required. The event will be Nov. 15 at 1 p.m.

Each of the seven startups will pitch their product or service in the "Shark Tank"-style competition to a panel of judges. This year's panel includes Bruce Greenstein from LHC Group, Aimee Quirk from Ochsner Health and Josh Summer of Cox Communications, among others.

Past winners include the Tennessee-based Winter Innovations, which won in 2019 for its Easy Whip needle — a new type of needle that makes whip-stitching easier and more effective. In 2020, Boston-based DynamiCare won for its platform that technology for saliva and urine test verification, treatment attendance check-in, providing coaching and distributing rewards to users.

Here's who will be competing for this year's prizes:

Prep Tech

Lafayette-based Prep Tech, the lone Louisiana company in the pool of finalists, has two primary product lines — ULTRAPREP and ISOCUBE.

ULTRAPREP is a system for preoperative skin preparation outside of the operating room, allowing procedure time to be used more efficiently. The process involves putting the limb in a containment sleeve and pooling on antiseptics.

ISOCUBE provides an extra layer of protection for healthcare workers. Working with personal protective equipment, ISOCUBE provides a barrier between workers and hospitalized patients with a suspected or a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19.

Crosscope

The California-based company, Crosscope, short for Computational Microscope, uses artificial intelligence to help doctors make precise cancer diagnoses and improve patient outcomes.

General Genomics

General Genomics, based in Midland, Texas, built a platform called Curo46 that helps determine a person's health risks, appropriate preventative measures, customized treatment programs and more.

General Genomics uses AI and machines to analyze a person's genetic markers, healthy history, and medical information.

Kinnos

Kinnos, a company based in Brooklyn, uses a colorizing platform called Highlight. The colorizer turns bleach and bleach wipes blue to show the area that has been disinfected to help users ensure that an entire surface has been disinfected.

According to Innovate South's website, Highlight was named a Best Infection Prevention Product by Newsweek.

NEVAP

NEVAP, based in California, creates breathing tubes that work to remove pathogens, which can reduce time on mechanical ventilation, lower the cost of the treatment and reduce patient mortality.

Protean BioDiagnostics

Based in Orlando, Protean BioDiagnostics created a cancer diagnostic service called Oncology MAPS. The system uses the highest quality tests and can be tailored to meet a cancer patient's exact needs during their treatment.

SafeBVM

Based in Missouri, SafeBVM adds an accessory called the SIP Safety Accessory to the bag valve mask, making emergency airway management safer. The attachment ensures that the airflow generated by pumping the bag is optimal and safe.

The product makes it where manual bag pumping achieves similar results as a mechanical ventilator.
