Ketchup sachets are now in short supply
America is experiencing a shortage of tomato ketchup sachets after the coronavirus pandemic led to a rise in demand for takeaway food and the need for greater hygiene. Sachets of the product often accompany delivery orders, and have also taken over from the bottles used for dine-in meals. Heinz, one of the most recognizable and most sold brands of ketchup, confirmed this demand was affecting its sachet supply and that it has already increased production lines in its factories and developed a "no-touch dispenser" for dine-in restaurants. The price of ketchup sachets has risen 13% since January 2020, according to Plate IQ.
However, the shortage has already led many restaurant managers to seek out alternative, generic ketchups, bulk-buying them and serving them in individual cups. Ketchup sachets may be the latest shortage caused by the pandemic, but they are not the first product to go missing from shelves because of changes caused by COVID-19.
