Live from New York, it's Tesla's competitors trying to steal the show from Elon Musk.

Three automakers aired electric vehicle commercials in the first half-hour of the "Saturday Night Live" episode hosted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Lucid Motors, Ford and Volkswagen showcased electric vehicles in advertisements in a bid to grab a portion of the spotlight on a night featuring the billionaire widely credited with leading an EV revolution.

Welcome to the 'golden age' of EVs: Are electric vehicles poised to kill the gasoline engine car?

Ford showed the Mustang Mach-E, an electric crossover version of its famed pony car. And Volkswagen showed off the VW ID.4, its first electric SUV.

If Tesla advertises anything, that would be a first. Musk has repeatedly declined to air Tesla ads, saying it's not necessary because demand for Tesla's products is always robust.

If Musk knew about the EV ads, he gave no indication during the first half of the broadcast.

But he did make reference to at least one competitor.

"I could say something truly shocking, like I drive a Prius," Musk joked during his monologue in a reference to the Toyota hybrid sedan.
