First Quantum suspends Zambia mine after accident kills worker
First Quantum Minerals (OTCPK:FQVLF) -7.3% in Thursday's trading after it suspended operations at its Sentinel open-pit copper mine in Zambia following a traffic accident at the site that killed one worker and severely injured another.
The company said operations at the pit will remain suspended until it is considered safe to resume; the Sentinel mine produced 64,120 metric tons of copper during Q3 2022.
Separately, Reuters reported First Quantum (OTCPK:FQVLF) directors will meet in Panama this week for a board meeting, amid a lengthy dispute over its contract with the government to operate the Cobre Panama mine.
First Quantum (OTCPK:FQVLF) and Panama's government are negotiating a contract for the copper mine's operations, with taxes and royalties at the top of discussions.
The government said last week that First Quantum (OTCPK:FQVLF) will not be allowed to expand the area of Cobre Panama's existing mining operations.
