Scammers and fraudsters have been taking full advantage of the chaos of the times. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission reported in April that Americans had already lost US$13.44 million to COVID-19-related scams. These range from classic charlatanism (“Buy this miracle cure!”) to sophisticated cyber criminals going after your mobile banking info. When it comes to protecting yourself from these scammers, remember: Never give money to a stranger without verifying their credentials; if an offer seems too good to be real, it probably is; and, lastly, there is still no government-authorized cure or home testing kit on the market yet.
