From Pittsburgh to the moon: Local company to deliver NASA moon rover

Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic has been awarded a $199.5 million contract to deliver a NASA moon rover.

Astrobotic is the world’s leading lunar logistics service provider.

According to a news release, the company has been tapped to deliver the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER, to the south pole of the Moon in 2023.

NASA said the robot will help in its mission to develop a sustainable and long-term presence on the moon.

VIPER will roam several miles of the moon, collect data in its search for ice and water and take soil samples.
