Twitter and Apple tell employees it's time to get back in the office: Report

Tech giants Apple and Twitter are telling their employees to get off the couch and get back in the office.

Apple messaged its workers and said action would be taken against any employee who does not enter the office at least three times a week, Zoe Schiffer, managing editor of the substack Platformer, tweeted on Wednesday.

Elon Musk shared a similar sentiment with Twitter staff, telling them coming into the office is "not optional," according to Schiffer.

"NEW: Apple is tracking employee attendance (via badge records) and will give employees escalating warnings if they don't come in 3x per week," she wrote in a now-viral tweet.

"ALSO: Elon Musk sent Twitter employees an email at 2:30am saying the "office is not optional" and noting SF was half empty yesterday."

Both Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook have made prior statements about having their respective staff return to the office, according to reports.

"For many of you, I know that returning to the office represents a long-awaited milestone and a positive sign that we can engage more fully with the colleagues who play such an important role in our lives," Cook said in a March 2022 memo.

In November, Musk told employees in an email sent at 2:39 a.m. that they would not be permitted to work from home.

"The road ahead is arduous and will require intense work to succeed. We are also changing Twitter policy such that remote work is no longer allowed, unless you have a specific exception. Managers will send the exceptions lists to me for review and approval," the email read, per Insider.

"Starting tomorrow (Thursday), everyone is required to be in the office for a minimum of 40 hours per week. Obviously, if you are physically unable to travel to an office or have a critical personal obligation, then your absence is understandable."
