Asking $950K in Chastain Park, postmodern dwelling brings 1980s time capsule

In Atlanta, it’s rare to find an operational dumbwaiter servicing three stories of a house. Or clerestory windows made of glass blocks. Or a thick pillar that doubles as a master bathroom shower.

All of that—and many other surprises—hit the market this week beneath the sloped rooflines of a true Buckhead original that recalls its 1986 origins in so many ways.

Set atop a hilly corner lot, about a city block’s distance west of Chastain Park on Hillside Drive, the stucco-sided four-bedroom is unsurprisingly the personal residence of an architect (thus the office drafting table).

Inside these 4,000 square feet are five bathrooms, a true cathedral ceiling, floating stairs, too many built-ins to counts (including full beds)—and nary a dull moment overall.

In the foyer, the atypical dimensions and lines are immediately apparent upon entry.

The postmodern approach isn’t every buyer’s cup of tea, and the home’s current time-capsule state, as the listing describes it, is a “diamond in the rough” that “does need some repair.”

It’s listed with Harry Norman Realtors for $950,000, obviously below homes of similar proportions in the tony district.

Could the location—coupled with hard-to-replicate perks like a three-car garage, full basement, and spacious patio—make a renovation worthwhile?

Interesting note: Records indicate the .6-acre property last sold in 1979 for just $23,000—or about $80,000 in today’s dollars.
