Opinion: San Diego region too dependent on tourism business

Re “What’s next?” (May 6): One answer is to jump on the pony that got us here, tourism. The other promotes the use of the community college system to better educate and open up opportunities for our very diverse population.

As a longtime resident who has traveled, I think the pandemic showed us that too much reliance on tourism, as we have done, is not our long-term solution. The action these past weeks by a property owner in Mission Beach to evict nine young working graduates to convert back to a short-term rental is absolutely the wrong direction.

It is time to recognize that our current and future housing costs can only be conquered by high wages that come from STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) graduates.
