According to AOL on Friday, its trailblazing Instant Messenger chat program will officially cease to exist later this year. AOL confirmed that the program will be retired effectively December 15, joining the likes of fellow 1990s favorites GeoCities and Ask Jeeves. Instant Messenger, which was first introduced to the world in 1997, quickly became a massive success, helping kids during the 1990s navigate the world of middle school and high school. Many now consider it to be a precursor to the social media world everybody knows today.
