After it broke new internet ground in online instant messaging twenty years ago, AIM is signing off for good. According to LifeHacker, the service will officially shutter on December 15th. Oath, the Verizon-owned company that includes both America Online and Yahoo, says it has no plans to replace the service. Even if AOL never fully embraced the idea of free online messaging, AIM was an instant hit when it launched in 1997.
