Why rising stocks don't benefit everyone

So Just How Does Food Get From Farms Around The World to Your Table

The average American meal travels roughly 1,500 miles from the farm where it is grown to the table where it's served, according to the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture. The latest trade statistics highlight that around 52% of fresh fruit and 22% of fresh vegetables are imported, with the largest quantities coming from Mexico and many others, including as far away as China! In the rush to transport fresh produce from the source to the supermarket there can be a risk of supply chain contamination. More than 250 different diseases can cause food poisoning, according to the Emerging Pathogens Institute at the University of Florida, which rank the most likely products to cause illnesses. The USDA Economic Research Service estimates that food borne sickness costs the U.S. economy around $15.5B each year.
