Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes maintained a close relationship, however, as we'll reveal in the following, things weren't always positive for Mewes, particularly in his personal life.

We're going to take a closer look at Mewes' addiction issues, and the reason he went missing after failing to appear at a court hearing. The moment caused a massive turnaround in his life. Thankfully these days, the actor appears to be in a better place. We'll take a closer look at what he's doing these days, both at home and professionally.

Jason Mewes Didn't Blame His Addiction Issues On Hollywood

When Jason Mewes started appearing in films, he still hadn't quit his day jobs. The actor was still delivering pizzas along with working a construction job up until Dogma was released got its release in 1999.

Mewes thrived as an actor, but would experience addiction issues behind the scenes. Mewes admitted that this didn't happen because of Hollywood or the lifestyle. The issue started to take place in New Jersey.

"I started using drugs in Jersey. It definitely isn't a Hollywood thing," Mewes said. "It definitely isn't a movie thing, or anything. I definitely feel I've started drinking, if anything, more, but that was more because I wanted to go out, and there's lots of fun clubs."

Mewes realized he was in a bad way after meeting with Kevin Smith on Thanksgiving. The actor refused to let Mewes in given his condition at the time.

“I remember me and him sitting out in front of his house, and he’s crying, saying, ‘I want to let you in, but the whole family is here,'” Mewes said.

“And I had a tank-top on, and I had track marks. And he’s like, ‘I can’t have you see them like that.’ And I’m like, ‘I can’t come in for a plate of Thanksgiving dinner?’ And he’s like, ‘You can’t. Here, I am going to bring you some food.’ That was the first time I got sober for a while," Mewes told Steve-O.

Mewes credits Smith for always stick by his side.

Jason Mewes Went Missing After He Failed To Appear At His Court Hearing, But Finally Got Cleaned Up Once He Returned

Mewes realized his addiction was really starting to spiral after he woke up on fire after a drug-infused night. At the time, Mewes went missing after he failed to show up for his court hearing. Mewes would drive down to New Jersey and finally turn himself in. He had two choices, a year in jail or a rehab stint. Mewes took the rehab, and it put his life back on track.

“I had four and a half years almost, and then I relapsed,” Jason Mewes said. “And that was only because, it’s not even like I went out and chased it. I had gotten hurt, and I got a shot of Demerol for the pain, and that sparked the whole thing back. ‘Oh, I remember that feeling and I miss it.’ I relapsed again, and Kevin was like, ‘You were doing so well. You had over four years. What happened?’ I said, ‘Look, I don’t think I was sharing what was going on."

"When I felt that shot of Demerol and was feeling good, I didn’t talk to someone. Like whoa, I’m scared. I felt that and I want to go back to that and stuff. And I wasn’t accountable to anybody or talking to anyone.'”

These days Mewes is in a much better place as a proud father.

Jason Mewes continues to keep busy in the industry. In 2022, Mewes took on a trio of projects, including reprising his role of Jay in Clerks III. The actor has more upcoming role in the future including Aah! Roach!, Moose Jaws and Twilight of the Mallrats.

As for his personal life, Mewes welcomed in a new family member, a boy, Lucien Lee. The couple also has a 7-year-old daughter Logan.

Mewes took to Instagram writing, "Fast & furious…he almost arrived in the backseat of my car at the hospital entrance," he captioned a set of photos from the day of the newborn's arrival."

"Thank you to our doula @iamhaizehawke, Dr Campbell & the team at Cedars-Sinai for the safe delivery of baby boy. We are home, and Mom & baby are doing great. Our lives are forever changed. Less sleep than last week but worth it ."

Clearly, the 48-year-old is in a better place.
