‘Batgirl’ axed

The upcoming “Batgirl” movie, starring “In the Heights” actress Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, has been axed. ET reports new leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery is pivoting the company back to theatrical releases and DC superhero movies “at a blockbuster scale.” The “Batgirl” film was estimated at a $90 million budget, partly due to Covid-related delays and protocols, and planned for an HBO Max streaming-only release but had built hype with the return of Michael Keaton as Batman and Ivory Aquino as DC Films’ first transgender star, playing Gordon’s trans roommate Alysia Yeoh, along with J.K. Simmons and Brendan Fraser.

HBO Max dropping films

Variety reports things are getting even weirder at WBD as several HBO Max films that were exclusive to the streaming service have been quietlly dropped. The sci-fi rom-com “Moonshot,” Melissa McCarthy’s “Superintelligence,” Seth Rogen’s “An American Pickle,” Anne Hathaway’s Covid heist movie “Locked Down” and Robert Zemeckis’ 2020 remake of “The Witches” have all been removed despite previously appearing as “Max Originals.” Speculation points to an effort to get streaming content payment obligations for underperforming titles off its books, which may also explain why the LeBron James-produced “House Party” remake and “Scoob!” sequel “Scoob: Holiday Haunt” have also been scrubbed.

‘Road House’ reboot

E! News reports two classic ‘80s movies are getting a remake: Jake Gyllenhaal will star in a reimagined take on “Road House,” originally starring Patrick Swayze as a zen bouncer in a shady Missouri town, and Selena Gomez will lead a revival of “Working Girl,” which originally starred Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver and Melanie Griffith in the story of a secretary whose business idea is stolen by her boss. Additional details have not been announced, but we can confirm that everything old is new again.
