Hugh Jackman continues to insist that he really did intend to retire from the Wolverine role prior to signing on for Deadpool 3.

Jackman discussed his surprise return as the X-Men's resident berserker in an interview with Deadline. "I'm a terrible poker player," he said. "All this time I was saying I was done, I really meant it. But anyway, somewhere deep down, this idea was obviously lurking and brewing." Jackman first played Wolverine in 2000's X-Men, reprising the part again in follow-up installments X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and X-Men: Apocalypse (2016). He also portrayed the character in three solo films -- X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013) and Logan (2017) -- the last of which was originally intended to serve as his swansong performance.

The Aussie actor pinpointed the moment he first regretted stepping down as Wolverine in a recent interview. Fittingly, Jackman says he started having second thoughts about walking away from the role that made him a household name while watching the first Deadpool movie. "I was 20 minutes into watching Deadpool, and I had just announced, literally, a few weeks before that Logan was going to be my last [time playing Wolverine], which I fully intended. And then I was like, 'Uh-oh,'" he said.

Jackman also teased what fans can expect from his portrayal of Wolverine in Deadpool 3, hinting that the upcoming sequel will lean into the character's more anti-social traits. He described the fan-favorite mutant as "angrier, acerbic [and] grumpy" in Deadpool 3, and promised that Wolverine won't pass up the opportunity to "take a lot of free shots" the movie's lead actor Ryan Reynolds. Jackman then went on to say that he was looking forward to playing up Wolverine's pricklier characteristics. "I'm going to have the time of my life," he said.

While Jackman is clearly excited to be suiting up as Wolverine once more, the star previously admitted that returning to the role is already impacting his existing commitments. Specifically, Jackman beefing up to superhero proportions has apparently caused headaches for Broadway production The Music Man's wardrobe department. Jackman recently apologized to both his dresser on The Music Man and his wife, both of whom now have to contend with his bulkier physique.

Deadpool 3 arrives in theaters on Nov. 8, 2024.
