James Gunn is again asking fans not to believe everything they hear about Superman movie casting. With few details to latch on to, it's not surprising that rumors are constantly circulating about Superman: Legacy.

Only a few things have been confirmed about DC's Superman reboot. So far, fans know that the movie is titled (for now) Superman: Legacy, that Henry Cavill will not reprise his role as Superman, that James Gunn will be writing and directing the movie, and that it's shooting for a 2025 release date. While the lack of concrete details has left plenty of room for questions and speculation, one of the most pressing topics has been who will play Superman. With Cavill's Superman out of the picture, who will don the blue and red suit next is anyone's guess.

While no official casting announcements have been made, fans are getting a better picture of what Gunn is looking for in his next Superman. In response to a rumor that the studio had already sent out casting calls for actors in their twenties for the Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen roles, Gunn tweeted, "Untrue. We haven’t begun casting other than making lists, and it’s not limited to people in their twenties." Previously, Gunn stated that his Superman will be younger than forty and might be younger than Batman.

Theoretically, fans probably won't have to wait much longer for more Superman casting details. When asked if fans could expect major casting announcements in the next six months, Gunn replied, "Yes." While a brief tweet is far from an official announcement, Gunn does not take his online presence lightly and does not have a history of purposely misleading fans. The Twitter exchange happened last month, so fans are even closer to getting big news about upcoming DC projects - how close remains unclear.

Although fans are still waiting for a big announcement, there is little to be gleaned from Gunn's latest tweet. In a tweet from January, Gunn clarified that casting would not begin until the script for the movie had been written. His most recent tweet about the subject mentions that he's been working on a list of potential actors for Superman: Legacy. Therefore, fans can assume that the script has been written and Gunn and his team are moving into the next stages of pre-production, albeit slowly.

Gunn's refusal to entertain Superman casting rumors hasn't stopped fans from giving their thoughts about who should be the next Superman. Euphoria's Jacob Eldori is a popular pick, as are Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell and Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery. The age range Gunn has discussed does leave the door open for many up-and-coming young actors looking for a project that will take their careers to the next level. Who will take up the mantle of Superman next remains uncertain; what is certain is that whoever it is will have big boots to fill.

Superman: Legacy is tentatively scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
