Nearly a decade after meeting on the set of Spike Jonze's 2012 film Her, engaged actors Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara will star alongside each other for the third time.

Director Lynne Ramsay revealed in an interview with El Espanol that the 46-year-old Phoenix and the 36-year-old Mara will both star in her new film Polaris.

Phoenix and Mara met on the set of Her and started dating in 2016, before starring alongside each other in 2018's Mary Magdalene.

No plot details were given for Polaris, though Ramsay and Phoenix first worked together in the 2017 thriller You Were Never Really Here.

Ramsay revealed the casting news during a trip to the Cinema Jove film festival, where she was awarded the Luna de Valencia Award for her career achievements.

'He's crazy, but he's the best actor I've ever met. Everything he does on the set has a reason,' Ramsay said in an interview.

'It's much more difficult when you come up with an original idea like this, but it's impossible not to get excited when you're preparing a movie with Joaquin,' she added.

The couple got engaged in July 2019, welcoming their first child, River, named after Joaquin's late brother, in September 2020.
