New set photos from Madame Web offer the first look at Emma Roberts' pregnant mystery character. As efforts to build out the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) continue, many obscure characters from the comics are getting their chance at an overdue live-action action treatment. After the 2015 Sony/Disney partnership for the Spider-Man: Homecoming films proved to be a blockbuster success, the studio developed its own Marvel cinematic universe with projects like Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius. And now, more Spider-Man spinoff films are in development, including Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and El Muerto.

Madame Web is arguably the most hotly anticipated film on the SSU slate. Directed by The Defenders and Jessica Jones helmer S. J. Clarkson, with writing from the Morbius duo Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, Madame Web is scheduled for release in October 2023. Dakota Johnson leads the ensemble that comprises Hollywood A-listers including Roberts, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Adam Scott. Since much of the movie's story is being kept under wraps, details on the characters and the plot aren't exactly abundant, although set leaks have given fans some idea of Madame Web's 2000s setting, as well as some of the prominent heroes that might show up in the movie.

Now, Marvel Updates has a shared new image from the filming location of Madame Web, offering a sneak-peek at Roberts' role. Since the image is a zoomed-out shot, not much can be discerned, but it's evident that Roberts' character will be pregnant in the movie. There is another picture that shows Johnson filming, but that doesn't necessarily offer any new information. Take a look at the snapshots below.

The new set photo has catalyzed a fervent discussion online, with fans theorizing what character Roberts could possibly be playing in Madame Web. Many are of the opinion that Roberts is portraying Jessica Drew/ Spider-Woman as the superheroine fought crime while heavily pregnant in the eponymous 2015 comic book title. But in that arc, Jessica's story did not overlap with any of the Madame Webs (Julia Carpenter or Cassandra Webb). So even if Jessica is in the movie, it's unlikely she would be expecting. Another scenario is that Roberts' mystery character is Mary Jane. On Earth-616, MJ gets pregnant when an adult Peter Parker loses his powers, although she ultimately miscarries after Alison Mongrain poisons her. Recently set photos from Madame Web showed the first look at Adam Scott's character, and his familiar attire led many to speculate that he could be playing a different version of Peter Parker, who has retired from his superhero duties. The hypotheses about Scott playing Parker and Roberts playing Mary Jane seem to line-up, making the possibility quite likely, although nothing can be said for sure until there is an official confirmation from the movie.

Finally, Roberts could also be playing an entirely new character who is not from the comics but shares an important relationship with Johnson's heroine. Johnson's Madame Web could even be protecting her from danger as there might be something that threatens the life of the unborn child. Of course, since the images are largely vague, it's hard to make something out of them. But fans might learn a bit more about Roberts' character in case more pictures surface from the movie's set. That said, Roberts' character will surely be one of the most intriguing elements to watch for when Madame Web comes out in theaters, and it will certainly be exciting to see multiple strong-headed women team up in the Spider-Man spinoff film.
