If you're not a "Mean Girls" devotee, here's the skinny: Tina Fey wrote the 2004 comedy movie about a new girl's transformative time in a high school clique called "The Plastics." The screenplay was based in part on the book "Queen Bees and Wannabees,"a book for parents of high school girls by Rosalind Wiseman.
The plot centers on social cliques in high school, body image issues, bullying, identity and how social pressures can affect teens.
"Mean Girls," starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, developed a cult following and retained popularity into the 2010s before the musical debuted on Broadway in 2018. Fey herself was in the movie, as was Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried (in her film debut), Jonah Meadows, Amy Poehler, and Ana Gasteyer. Mark Waters directed.
The musical has a book by Fey, music by Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Neil Benjamin. It premiered in Washington, D.C. in Oct. 2017 and opened at the August Wilson Theatre in New York City in April 2018.
