Hulu’s Predator prequel Prey prioritizes its action-packed story over dialogue, according to director Dan Trachtenberg.

Speaking to TimeOut, Trachtenberg discussed what Prey focuses on to set itself apart from the other Predator movies. "There's not a lot of dialogue in the movie – it's largely told through action, and all of [Naru's] emotionality really comes through," he said.

Prey stars Amber Midthunder as Naru, an untested Comanche warrior who becomes the target of an enhanced alien hunter. The film serves as a historical prequel to the original Predator movies. The Predator in Prey will be distinctly different from previous incarnations. While still boasting advanced technology, relative to the period, this iteration of the iconic alien will have a different set of armor and weaponry, which it will use against the warriors of the Comanche Nation. The similarities with other, more familiar film genres may have been intentional. Trachtenberg previously explained he pitched the unique take to Fox Studios as a Western without Cowboys.

The film includes many First Nations actors along with Midthunder, and is the first Hollywood film to offer subtitles and a dub in the Comanche language. Prey is also the first film in the Predator franchise that isn’t titled after the aliens themselves, and also the first to get a direct streaming release on Hulu.

The original Predator was released in 1987. It starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of an elite team of paramilitary troopers, hunted by an advanced alien predator in a Central American rainforest. Despite mixed reviews, the film was a box office success and spawned a sequel that was released in 1990. This was followed by two more instalments in the franchise released over the next three decades. The final film in the franchise, The Predator, was released in 2018 and saw another group of mercenaries taking on a new Predator threat to Earth.

Although Prey has been referred to as a prequel film, Trachtenberg previously hinted that audiences should not expect any direct references or connections to the original film. He explained, "My friends went to see Predator and told me about the scene in which Billy fights the Predator on a bridge over a waterfall... But when I saw the movie, that wasn’t in it, and I wanted to see that movie. Spiritually, Prey is connected to that moment."

Prey releases on Hulu on Aug. 5, 2022.
