Don’t be fooled by the (extremely long) title, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is more than just a cheesy remake designed to tug at the heartstrings of Disney nostalgics. The mockumentary style show has enough lovable characters, catchy songs, and drama, both on-screen and off, to claim its own spot as a beloved program.

The show follows the current students of East High, the school where the original High School Musical films were shot, as they navigate friendships, romances, and opening nights. It begins with a new drama teacher being appalled at the fact that the school had never put on a production of HSM and deciding that this needed to change. Joshua Bassett as Ricky takes this as the perfect opportunity to win back his theater-loving ex-girlfriend, Olivia Rodrigo as Nini. The two end up getting cast as Troy and Gabriella from the original movies and, thus, a whirlwind season of breakups, makeups, and show-mances begins. You can watch it all now on Disney+.

The Show Goes On

The show continues to evolve, incorporating elements of the original movies, while simultaneously moving farther and farther away from their plots. The second season has the students putting on a production of Beauty and the Beast and competing in the Alan Menken competition for high school theater.

Season three returns (somewhat) back to the High School Musical theme, as it brings the cast to a theater summer camp. At the camp, the students are putting on a production of Frozen that is being filmed for a documentary for Disney + and is hosted by High School Musical’s Corbin Bleu. Talk about meta!

Future of the Show

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has been renewed for season four and creator, Tim Federle, promises a “real return to the original” season. It is set to have the students putting on a production of High School Musical 3, as the original cast returns to the school to film the highly-anticipated High School Musical 4. It has been confirmed that original HSM stars Corbin Bleu, Kaycee Stroh, Lucas Grabeel, Monique Coleman, Alyson Reed, and Bart Johnson will be appearing in this new season.
