Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter and his wife, Lauren Kitt, spoke to Good Morning America on Thursday morning (Jan. 14) about the trying times they faced before announcing that they are expecting their third child. The couple revealed the day before that a baby is on the way after Kitt suffered a series of miscarriages.

“It was a shock, not a surprise,” fitness trainer Kitt, 37, told GMA about the unexpected news they got around Thanksgiving when they visited the doctor and found out she was due in April. Not aware she was pregnant nearly five and a half months in, Kitt was convinced she couldn’t have another baby after suffering several miscarriages in the past.

“I didn’t think it was possible to have another child. It was a 1% chance, 1 in 500 at my age,” she said. “It was even less than that for my medical conditions, my medical history. And so I was just living my life with my two children and going on as if, you know, I was never going to have anymore.”

Though she wasn’t experiencing any symptoms of pregnancy, Kitt said she suspected something was off when she suddenly developed insomnia. “I didn’t believe him. I’m like, ‘I’m not showing, there’s now way,'” she recalled thinking when the doctor told her the good news. Aware that his wife’s pregnancy is high risk, Carter told GMA that they are trying to make their house a “nice, healthy and peaceful” place as they prepare for their new arrival.

Due to the pandemic, Carter is off the road for the first time in almost a decade, so the couple have had plenty of time to prep their Las Vegas home and have a bit of fun, including an adorable family photo shoot they posted on Thursday in which they tried to wrangle the kids for just one minute. “As you can see, this photo wasn’t easy to get,” wrote Carter. “We just want to thank all of our Dear Friends and Fans for all the love and support you have given us during this time.. There are so many emotions that we are going through being the fact that Lauren is high risk. But we know that no matter what happens God will be there.”

The couple, who are the parents of 4-year-old song Odin Reign and 1-year-old daughter Saoirse Reign, announced baby No. 3 with an Instagram video of the sonogram on Wednesday, which Carter captioned, “Sometimes life blesses you with little surprises.” Kitt revealed in 2015 during a pre-taped video package for Dancing With the Stars (when Carter was competing) that she had suffered a miscarriage. Carter shared tweeted in 2018 that his wife, whom he married in 2014, went through another miscarriage and they had lost a baby girl.
