"Bridge Over Troubled Water" is conspicuously absent from Paul Simon'sHomeward Bound: The Farewell Tour No Longer.

That changed Sunday night (June 10) when Simon gave the Grammy Award-winning Simon & Garfunkel hymn its tour debut, telling the crowd at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in suburban Detroit that he hadn't yet played it during the trek, which began on May 16 in Vancouver.

"Even though I wrote it, it has a strange deterrent for me -- that's not much of an introduction is it?," he quipped, explaining that he was "setting expectations low" for the rendition -- a shimmering, stylized arrangement that spotlighted the members of yMusic, the New York chamber sextet that's part of Simon's band on this tour.

After receiving a rapturous response, including a standing ovation, Simon noted that "maybe I'll sing it again sometime."

The Homeward Bound tour plays in North American until June 20, then heads to Europe 10 days later and has one more U.S. leg in September, closing with three New York shows -- two at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 20-21 and a third, on Sept. 22 at a location to be confirmed. Simon told the Detroit crowd on Sunday that "I don't know what (farewell) means...One thing will end and another will come. That's the way it was meant to be."
