  • Slide 1 of 53: Songs are the soundtrack of our lives. A song can evoke a romance that ended with wedding bells or a broken heart, or call to mind a high school summer or an entire era. If you heard The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” for what seemed like a million times last year, for instance -- and it was that ubiquitous -- you’ll probably forever associate it with the COVID-19 pandemic.  There are other songs that you might not have heard for a decade or more but whose lyrics you still remember. There are songs, both old and new, that become so-called earworms that get stuck in your head -- you keep hearing them and/or singing them to yourself whether you want to or not.     24/7 Tempo has compiled a list of the two most popular songs every year since 1970, based on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Some were hits so long ago that many of today’s listeners might never have heard them -- for instance, “Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree” or “Rhinestone Cowboy.” (For a musical history lesson, see the most popular song the year you were born.) Others became timeless classics. Even if you were born decades after the movie “Saturday Night Fever” opened, you’ll probably recognize the opening bars of “Stayin' Alive” right away. And it wasn’t even the most popular song in 1978 -- that honor was claimed by “Hot Child In The City.” (These are the 50 absolute best songs from the movies.) Some of the more recent songs on our list are still getting plenty of airplay. Adele’s “Rolling In the Deep,” the most popular song of 2011, still gets played today. So do more recent mega-hits like “Happy” by Pharrell Williams (2014) and “Uptown Funk!” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars (2015). And of course there’s “Levitating” by Dua Lipa and DaBaby, the No. 1 hit of 2021 thus far -- another song that some of us might long associate with these difficult times.

  • If you like pizza -- and who doesn’t? -- then you’re going to like this. 24/7 Tempo has created a list of the cities with the most pizza places, using data from the Pizza Index 2021, Yelp API, and the US Census Bureau. Our list has some interesting features. There are three cities in Florida among the top 10 with the most pizza places: Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Pompano Beach. That just might be because they’re also major tourist destinations, with lots of visitors from other cities where pizza is popular, and looking for casual dining options while enjoying the surf and sun. (Here are the best road trips to take before summer ends.) Pizza must be very popular in Colorado, too, which has three spots in the top 10 as well: Westminster, Centennial, and Longmont. In fact they’re not just in the same state, they’re all less than an hour’s drive from Denver. Nearby Boulder is also on the list, at No. 33. Maybe people work up an appetite with all the outdoor recreation options in the Rocky Mountains. (These are the best American cities for hiking.) Washington, D.C. ranks No. 9 and nearby Arlington and Alexandria in Virginia are also on the list. Maybe running the country is hungry work. There are also several college towns on the list, including Berkeley, California and Cambridge, Massachusetts, which is hardly a surprise. And while we’re on the subject, Surprise, Arizona ranks No. 21. To identify the cities with the most pizza places, 24/7 Tempo reviewed the number of pizza places per 100K from the Pizza Index 2021 for 259 cities around the country. Total population used to adjust for pizzerias per 100K population was from the US Census Bureau.

American Cities with the Most Pizza Places

  • 2020 was one of the most challenging years in recent history. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the lives of millions of people, happiness was not an easy measure to quantify. It’s also highly individual. What makes a person happy is influenced by different factors that may frequently change, depending on social, financial, and health status. There is no doubt that the pandemic has tested us in many ways. Many have had to face financial, domestic, health, and other challenges as a result. What people may not realize is that where they live may have an effect on how happy they are. To identify the most miserable cities in America, according to residents, 24/7 Tempo reviewed the happiness score of all 383 metro areas in the U.S. from digital health company Sharecare’s Community Well-Being Index. The index measures whether individuals feel a sense of purpose, have supportive relationships, are financially secure, satisfied with their community, and are in good physical health. More than 450,000 U.S. adults were asked questions on over 600 elements of social determinants of well-being. The South appears to be the region with the most cities where residents feel unhappy. Though Sharecare’s data shows resilience and improvement in well-being in many places, happiness gaps have persisted in rural areas, and, in many cases, such gaps have even increased. Counties in non-metro areas scored lower on the Index’s 100-point scale than counties in metro areas in happiness. Metro counties scored higher for all domains except community resources such as libraries and churches. Not only has the COVID-19 pandemic made many people feel less happy than previous years, but it has caused the average person’s stress level to increase significantly. Read about how stress and other things can lead to memory loss and brain shrinkage.

The Most Miserable Cities in America, According to Residents

  • Pizza is one of the four basic food groups, at least in the United States. Originally from Naples, it was brought to the U.S. by Italian immigrants in the 19th century. The first dedicated pizzeria opened in New York around the beginning of the 20th century -- there are conflicting stories as to when exactly, though Lombardi’s in Manhattan’s Little Italy claims to have been the pioneer, back in 1905 -- and now there are pizza places everywhere. (These are the 25 best pizza places in America.) 24/7 Tempo has assembled a list of the states with the most pizza places per capita, based on the Pizza Index 2021 published by the financial advisory site Expensivity. The site derived the number of pizzerias in each state from Yelp and MenuWithPrice, and 24/7 Tempo used U.S. Census Bureau data to add population figures, then used them to compute the number of pizzerias per 100,000 people. The state with the largest number of total pizzerias is California, but because its population is so large, it falls to No. 43 on a per capita basis. At least in part for the same reason, the famous pizza capital of New York comes in at No. 24, while Illinois -- famous for Chicago’s unique deep-dish pies -- ranks only No. 12. (New York City and Chicago place highly, however, on our list of the best cities for pizza lovers.) The No. 1 state for pizzerias per 100,000 residents is tiny Rhode Island. It may be the smallest state in area and the ninth-smallest in population -- but a big percentage of that population is of Italian origin. The same is true of Rhode Island’s neighbor, No. 2 Connecticut, considered by some experts to have the best pizza in America. Hawaii, on the other hand, is the state with the fewest pizza places. It’s the farthest state from Rhode Island and its cuisine has more Asian influences than Italian.
