Authorities say a person is dead and two are injured, one critically, after a suspected drug deal Wednesday morning in the northeast valley, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.

The incident was reported around 3:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of N. Nellis Boulevard, near Lake Mead Boulevard, Lt. Ray Spencer said in an email.

A Jeep with a driver and two passengers arrived at the front of an apartment complex, he later said during a briefing. Another man arrived and got into the Jeep for a suspected marijuana deal.

Someone armed with an assault-style rifle approached the Jeep and pointed it at the driver, and the two got into a struggle over the firearm, according to Spencer.

A shot went off and hit the driver in the head, while one of the passengers took out a gun and shot the person who approached the Jeep.

The Jeep drove away and stopped nearby to call 911, while the man with the assault-style rifle and another person left for the nearby apartment complex. Officers later found one of the men dead with a gunshot wound to the head.

The driver of the Jeep was taken to UMC in critical condition. One of the passengers told doctors at the hospital that he was shot in the buttocks as well, according to Spencer.

It's the second homicide reported in the early morning hours Wednesday that detectives are investigating.

The first was in a neighborhood near Flamingo Road and U.S. 95. That situation ended in a suspected murder-suicide, according to Spencer.
