Two people were injured in a shooting at Heritage High School in Newport News, Virginia, on Monday afternoon, local police said.

"Two people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening," the Newport News Police Department said in a press release. "Investigation remains ongoing."

Newport police Chief Steve Drew said in a press conference that the two people who were injured were a 17-year-old male student and a 17-year-old female student.

He added that two other students were also treated after the incident - one who injured his arm in a fall, and one who had an asthma attack during the shooting.

Drew said officials were still searching for the suspect.

The department said students had been evacuated from the building and were sent to the school's tennis courts for safety.

There is a major police presence at the school, WAVY reported, and the local FBI field office had been dispatched to assist in an investigation into the shooting, the ABC News reporter Alex Mallin tweeted, citing an official.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unknown.
