A mother is facing charges in Canton after a toddler found a gun and accidentally shot a sibling in the head.

The woman’s 2-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son were left outside in her car while she and her boyfriend were allegedly inside visiting with a friend. According to Canton Police Chief Otha Brown, the toddler found her mother’s gun under a car seat and shot her 9-year-old brother in the head.

Their 10-year-old sibling was also in the car and witnessed the accident.

The child who was shot in the head is being treated at University of Mississippi Medical Center and is reportedly in stable condition.

“It happened here today. And our feelings go out to the parent,” said Chief Brown. “We pray that the child will make it through.”

It is unclear how long the children were left inside the car while the mother and her boyfriend were inside the home.

According to Canton police, the mother of the children is facing neglect charges. The two other children are currently being cared for by their grandmother.
