A man shot a woman and toddler to death before killing himself at grocery store in Royal Palm Beach, Fla., on Thursday, police said.

Panicked shoppers raced from the Publix as the shooting took place. Store employees immediately started shouting for everyone to get out, witnesses said.

The names of the shooter and victims have not yet been released. Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said cops believe they knew each other.

Juan Guardia told the Palm Beach Post he was in the deli area when the shooting happened in the produce aisle.

“I heard, ‘They’re shooting!’ A woman Publix worker said, ‘Run! Shooting!’” Guardia said. “I was scared. It’s sad because everything happened fast. Everyone was running, some employees were crying.”

Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay said the child would have turned 2 next month, WPTV reported.

Royal Palm Beach resident Oahtee Moody expressed his shock to the Palm Beach Post.

“This is not a Publix problem. This is a people problem,” he said. “I was born and raised here, and I never would expect this to happen.”

Royal Palm Beach is located about 15 miles west of West Palm Beach.

Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay released a statement calling for politicians to take action.

“Tomorrow we must step up and engage in a very honest conversation about why this happened and what we can do specifically to prevent this violence,” McKinlay said. “Inaction is not an option.”

The attack does not meet the National Violence Archive’s definition of a “mass shooting,” which it defines as as an event where four or more people are killed or injured, not counting the gunman.

The number of mass shootings in the country this year is 232.
