An ACIPCO employee was killed Thursday morning in an industrial accident at the north Birmingham facility.

The accident happened at 10:45 a.m. at ACIPCO on 31st Avenue North. Details of the accident have not yet been released, but authorities said the incident happened in the railyard.

Company officials identified the employee as Mark McAlpine. He was in his 57 and lived in Hayden.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said McAlpine sustained blunt force injuries when the train he was riding on partially derailed.

ACIPCO Communications Manager Joy Carter released a statement saying that a thorough investigation is being conducted.

“Counselors are on-site to meet with our employees,’' according to the statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and coworkers.”
