An armed intruder is dead after he was shot by an off-duty D.C. Police officer at his front door. The man was allegedly attempting to break in to a Reston, Va. apartment Friday night, according to police.

Detectives responded to a call on the 12000 block of Starboard Drive at 11:36 p.m. where a tenant reportedly shot a man who had been causing a disturbance in a breezeway area.

The tenant told police when he opened his door, the man was standing in his doorway and raised a gun at him.  The tenant was carrying a gun and fired one shot at the man, hitting him in his upper body.

A D.C. Police spokesperson has confirmed that the tenant who shot the man is a D.C. Police sergeant.  The sergeant has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
